What is your honest opinion of Dolce&Gabbana? I don't presume myself to be a big fashion expert or anything, but they have a truly good collection only once in a while. True they did give some game changing looks through the years, but I have a feeling a lot of their collections are just fillers. Off course you can't expect every collection to be groundbreaking (especially with the amount of styles fashion houses are required to put out these days (by the by, this is a hell they chose for themselves, as it is mostly race for money. But I guess once you are in the big leagues, you play their way or no way). Anyways, as I was saying, fillers…. Is this a filler or a game changer? I guess we'll see once the spring rolls out and we get to see the PR machine do it's work ( do I sound a bit cynical. Probably because I am.)
While looking at it I just kept thinking: "Where are my old Burda magazines, I am sure there is a pattern for this exact dress (!?!?!?!)".
Anyways, clothes is no big deal here. Styling was quite fun though.

The truly great collections were at their beginnings, the late '80's. An aesthetic that was luscious with fabrics and quality, and everyone wanted the Merry Sicilian Widow mood. There were more fabric books in their house, more racks of samples and any choice was possible. The toll came quickly, in my opinion ... in the way that branding and diffusion need attention and the core line regressed to very expensive cheerful madame clothes, dependent on stilettos and marketing and p/r lending clothes to brilliant stars to walk on the red carpet.
ReplyDeleteThe intrinsic value diminished proportionate to the speeding prices and clothes became a slicker formula than the original whatever-it-takes beauty the pair turned out that was sure to be sensual, classy, whimsical and pure unadulterated creation by two very great designers who captured a mood that was magic.
A pretty dress is not what any collection is about. It's about mood and sustainability, the magic that an Oscar de la Renta has, a Karl Lagerfeld. You know what the collections will be like even as each surprises you and in that duality in genius. And in many cases beauty.

ReplyDeleteI fully agree with you. Dolce & Gabbana just don`t deliver. They are only innovative or better 'contemporary' in lifestyle, not in fashion.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing they`re really good at is print-mixing but they definitly habe no idea about sewing & patterns (since they learned neither tailoring nor designing).
